FAMILY COUNSELING
Family counseling is a type of psychotherapy that helps families deal with problems in their relationship in a safe, impartial setting. Some or all family members can come together to work on issues that are hurting the family so they can learn to better understand each other.
At the first appointment, the therapist will obtain information from family members to help complete an initial assessment. Then, if needed, the therapist will meet with individual family members to learn more detailed information. Family members will then work with their therapist to come up with specific goals and to find the best ways to reach those goals. This may include the therapist giving family members "homework" to practice the skills they talked about in the session. Counseling ends when the family decides that they have reached the goals they set.
What if other members of my family aren't interested in counseling?
Individuals in a family where others are not willing to seek counseling services are urged to contact Catholic Charities to begin either individual counseling or family counseling with those members who are willing to do so. Therapists will work with these individuals or family groups to find the best ways to improve their family life.
