MARRIAGE COUNSELING
Marriage counseling, also known as couples counseling, helps couples deal with problems in their relationship in a safe, impartial setting. Here, couples can work on issues caused by poor communication, financial stress, family stressors, infidelity, resentment, and other specific challenges in their relationship.
What to expect?
During a typical first appointment, one of our certified therapists will complete an initial assessment by asking the couple some basic questions. Then, if needed, the therapist will meet individually with both partners to gain more detailed information. Couples will then work with their therapist to develop specific goals the couple wants to work on. This might include the therapist giving the couple "homework" or other creative ways for the couple to practice the skills they talked about in their sessions. Counseling ends when the couple decides that they have reached their goals.
What if my spouse isn't interested in counseling?
If one partner is unwilling to seek counseling services the other spouse is urged to contact Catholic Charities for individual counseling. Here, that person and a therapist can talk about what is happening and how to improve the relationship, as well as how to use what they gain in therapy to reach out to their partner.
